Cognitive Assessment (memory screening basics)

Brain health prevention is mostly lifestyle + early notice.

  • Protect sleep, hearing, blood pressure, and activity level.

  • Report new confusion, getting lost, or medication mistakes.

  • Ask about reversible causes (B12, thyroid, meds).

Medicare Coverage

Cognitive screening may be part of the AWV, and further evaluation can be covered as medically necessary Part B care.

  • Follow-up diagnostic evaluation may include labs, imaging, or specialist referral.

  • Medicare Advantage may require network/prior authorization for testing/specialists.

Key takeaways

  • AWV is a good annual checkpoint for memory concerns.

  • Follow-up is typically diagnostic (different rules).

  • Ask about reversible causes early.

Good to Know

Provider Accepts Assignment

In Original Medicare, “accepts assignment” means a provider agrees to Medicare’s approved amount as full payment (with you paying any required deductible/coinsurance). For many preventive services, using a provider who accepts assignment can help keep your costs lower and more predictable.

Screening vs Diagnostic

A screening test is done when you don’t have symptoms, to catch a problem early. A diagnostic test is done because you do have symptoms, an abnormal screening result, or a known condition that needs evaluation. The difference matters because Medicare may cover each one differently, and your costs can change based on how the service is billed.
