Transcript (Heart Disease and Medicare)

Heart disease is a concerning health condition, but support can be found.  Medicare can help with Heart disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. Part A helps when someone is admitted to a hospital. Part B covers doctors, tests, and outpatient services. Part D is generally for prescriptions through a pharmacy.

Part B can help pay for routine preventive care visits and screening services. Heart disease prevention focuses on blood pressure, cholesterol, tobacco use, and diabetes. Health screening can help FIND RISKS EARLY.  It's important to call 9-1-1 if someone experiences heart related symptoms.  This includes severe chest pressure, jaw pain, or shortness of breath.

Preventive services support health, early detection, and smarter treatment choices. Medicare covers cholesterol and lipid tests once every five years. You can receive up to eight tobacco cessation counseling sessions each year under Part B. Diagnostic tests like E.K.G's are also covered when medically necessary.

Medicare Part A helps pay for inpatient hospital stays.

It may also cover skilled nursing, hospice, and limited home health care.

Medicare Part B covers medical services. Think of Part B as coverage for outpatient care and doctors.

Hospital stays have two distinct statuses: admitted and observation. Inpatient admission is covered under Medicare  Part A  ,while observation services are typically covered under Medicare Part B. This AFFECTS your out-of-pocket costs, including deductibles and copays. Part B covers physician services for outpatient and inpatient stays. Stents, bypass surgery, and valve procedures are covered when needed.

Medically necessary rehabilitation is often covered under Medicare. Cardiac rehabilitation is covered for qualifying heart events and conditions. Recovery may involve home health or skilled nursing after a qualifying hospital stay. Skilled nursing care typically requires a three-day inpatient hospital stay first.

Prescription drug plans typically cover most heart medications. Drug plan formularies include tiers, rules, and prior authorization. A formulary is a drug list covered by your Part D plan. Prescription drug coverage, co-pays and deductibles vary by plan formulary, tiers, and pharmacy used.

Part B usually covers injections and medications given in a medical facility.

Medicare coverage depends on medical need, care location, and services provided. So REVIEW your Medicare benefits carefully. Confirm coverage with your doctor’s office before tests, procedures, or rehabilitation. PROACTIVE discussions about heart issues are crucial.

With the right questions, heart care becomes less overwhelming. Take it one step at a time. A simple plan with Medicare coverage can provide clarity.
