Myths About Arthritis

Arthritis is common, but there’s still a lot of confusion about what it is, how it behaves, and what Medicare will actually cover. Clearing up a few myths can make it easier to make good decisions and avoid delays in care.

Myth #1: “Arthritis is just normal aging. Nothing can be done.”

Getting older does not automatically mean living with constant, severe joint pain. While wear-and-tear on joints is common with age, many treatments can reduce pain, improve movement, and protect joint function. Talking with a doctor early, using physical therapy, staying active, and managing weight can all make a real difference. The goal is not “just live with it,” but “live well with it.”

Myth #2: “Resting the joints is always better than moving.”

Short rest during a painful flare can be helpful, but long-term “babying” the joints often makes stiffness and weakness worse. Gentle movement usually helps nourish cartilage, strengthen muscles, and support balance. Activities like walking, water exercise, or tai chi can often be safer and more helpful than complete rest. A physical therapist can help design a plan that avoids overdoing it.

Myth #3: “Only very old people get arthritis.”

Arthritis is more common with age, but it can show up earlier in life, especially with past joint injuries, heavy physical work, autoimmune conditions, or certain family histories. Joint pain in midlife is not something to ignore. Even if symptoms seem mild, it’s worth mentioning them during a wellness visit or regular checkup so problems can be tracked over time.

Myth #4: “All joint pain must be arthritis.”

Joint pain can come from many causes, including tendon problems, bursitis, muscle strain, gout, or other conditions. That’s why diagnosis matters. Medicare may help cover the evaluation, including exams and tests, when they’re medically necessary. Assuming every ache is “just arthritis” can lead to self-treating and delaying the right care.

Myth #5: “Surgery is the only real treatment for arthritis.”

Joint replacement can be life-changing for some people, but it’s rarely the first step. Many people benefit from non-surgical options like physical therapy, occupational therapy, injections, bracing, weight management, and medications. These approaches can delay or sometimes avoid the need for surgery. When surgery is needed, Medicare may help with hospital care, the procedure, and follow-up rehab, depending on the plan and eligibility.

Myth #6: “All arthritis medicines are dangerous or addictive.”

Every medication has risks and benefits, but not all arthritis medicines are the same. Some are simple anti-inflammatory drugs, while others are more advanced treatments for inflammatory types of arthritis. A doctor or pharmacist can explain which options are safer based on someone’s other health conditions. Medicare drug coverage (Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug benefits) may help with many arthritis medications, but costs and rules vary by plan.

Myth #7: “If a doctor orders it, Medicare will automatically cover it.”

Medicare coverage almost always depends on medical necessity, documentation, and plan rules. A doctor’s recommendation is important, but it doesn’t guarantee payment for every test, treatment, or service. For example, long-term help with bathing, meals, or housekeeping is usually considered custodial care and isn’t covered by Original Medicare.
